ILTS 206 Sub-Area 3 Practice Question #13

A first grade class is learning about simple machines such as wheels and axles, levers, inclines, and pulleys. When the children go out to the playground that day, the teacher asks them to find an example of a lever. Which piece of playground equipment would best represent this simple machine?

A seesaw is a first-class lever simple machine. Levers are boards or beams that move on a fixed point, called a fulcrum.  With the fulcrum of a seesaw located in the middle of the board, it allows for people to lift each other up when they push down on their side. (This is referred to as shifting the effort and the load.) In the photo are examples of 2 simple machines found on a playground – a lever (the seesaw) and an inclined plane (the slide).
